SPOTLIGHT OF THE MONTH - JANUARY 2001
Editor in Chief and Comic Fan

1. Your Screen Name(s): bluedevil2002 and other variations

2. Your Real Name/Nickname: Chip Caroon

3. Your Birthdate: December 26

4. DCM titles that you write: Spider-Man, The Shadow 2000. I have also written a War of the Worlds mini-series, and a Detective Chimp one-shot. I have also written a lot of the issues of Detective Comics, and co-write X-Men, Avengers League, and The Shadow.

5. DCM titles you might like to write someday: Batman, Superman, Static, Green Hornet, a Contest of Champions-like mini-series with a bunch of other writers

6. Why did you join? I came up with the idea to merge the universes together.

7. What's your favorite thing about DCM? It's unpredictable. And it has so many twists. Plus, it's great to see some characters teamup and not have to worry about dimensional barriers. Also, it's great to be able to work with other writers, and bounce ideas off one another (and have big crossovers!).

8. What are your other hobbies? Collecting comics and old time radio shows. I'm also a percussionist.

9. What are your dislikes? Pokemon and ripoffs - and the fact that they have been forced onto everyone. The high prices of comics and other merchandise, overmarketing of certain products, especially when they are crap.

10. Why are you doing this survey? Because I made everyone else do it.

11. What's the most insane thing you ever did? I don't know, there have been a lot.

12. What advice do you have for others, to better the human race? Give comics to kids, and get Pokemon off the air, forever. Seriously though, we need to stop fighting over stupid stuff, like race and creed. Also, don't get in fights over little stupid things.

13. What are some bad habits you have? Talking too much about comics, spending more money than I have, never wanting to buy "big things" even when I have more than enough money. I'm too frugal for my own good. Also, I never seem to be able to finish up comic storylines once I begin buying them. However, I am working to make my collection a little more complete.

14. List your favorite quotes/words/expressions: "Guns for Monkeys!"

15. What do you hope to contribute to the world? A lot of ideas and stories. Maybe some ground breaking inventions a long way down the line.

16. What comics do you read? Cable, Fantastic Four, Batman, Detective Comics, Daredevil, Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate X-Men, occasionally Superman. I am dropping X-Men in April 2001. Sometime in 2001, I'll be cutting back to Cable, the two Ultimate series, and occasional Batman.

17. How did you first get interested in comics? I was watching the X-Men cartoon. Then later, I went into a comic shop and picked up X-Men Adventures Vol. 2 #1 and an Uncanny X-Men #9 reprint. About a year later, I became serious about collecting and started with "X-Cutioner's Song" and "2099: Fall of the Hammer". I really got into DC a few summers later when I started with "Death of Superman" and "Knightfall". Since then, I have gathered over 800 comics, mostly Marvel, but the DC side is actually growing more right now!

18. How did you first get involved in fan fiction? I had just gotten on the internet, and I was bored, so I typed fan fiction into the search engine. I don't know why I thought of it. Maybe I saw some when looking for comic sites. Interestingly enough, I had been writing some Marvel related stories (not on the Internet, though), which could be considered fanfic, although I didn't call it that at the time. Anyway, I eventually found Marvel-X. I tried to get some stuff posted there, but various reasons kept me off. So, I started my own site, which was very similar, therefore it didn't do well. Then, one night, I was looking at the futuristic fanfic sites and was trying to come up with a new idea. For some reason, I thought about merging the two universes together. Originally, I wanted to set it in 2050, and it would take place after an event called "The Merging." However, several people came and convinced me to merge retroactively, which IMO is more fun.

19. Who's your favorite comic book character/team? Right now, Batman is my favorite character. I'm really trying to find a lot more Batman comics for my collection. Team - probably X-Men, since I've been with them the longest, but the 2000 stuff really sucked. I don't know if I'll try it when the new writers come. (I need to cut back on comics a bit.) Other characters that I like are Beast, Daredevil, Nightwing, and Superman.

20. What team/character do you think you write the best or would love to try to write? I really think I can write X-Men the best, because I know them the most. However, I try to stay away from the typical Rogue/Gambit fanfics that crowd the net. The Shadow comes easy to me too, especially if I do the character similar to the radio version. Batman would probably be fairly easy to do once in a while, but I don't think I could do a permenent gig. I want to write Daredevil, but I don't know enough about the character. I also would love to write a Cable fanfic sometime.

How about who you can't write, or wouldn't want to write? The character I don't want to write is Gambit. I just can't get that accent right. That's why I killed him off in Crisis on Merging Earths. Also, I don't really care about most of the X-spinoffs.

21. What do you think of this survey? Interesting.
